A physical SIM is the removable card in a tray. An eSIM is a digital carrier profile stored inside the iPhone. Both connect the iPhone to cellular service, but setup, travel, device switching, and compatibility differ.
This guide applies to iPhone XS and later. U.S. iPhone 14 and newer models are eSIM-only; models in other regions may still include a SIM tray.

What eSIM Is
- The carrier activates a digital SIM profile through a QR code, carrier app, or device transfer.
- Active eSIM lines appear under Settings > Cellular.
- An iPhone can store multiple eSIMs and use Dual SIM on supported models.
- There is no card to lose, damage, or wait for in the mail.
- Moving service can be fast when the carrier supports eSIM transfer.
What a Physical SIM Is
- A nano-SIM is a small plastic card with a chip.
- It goes into the iPhone SIM tray with a SIM tool or paperclip.
- Moving to another compatible phone can be as simple as moving the card.
- Physical SIMs remain common for prepaid carriers and travel SIMs in many countries.
Which Should You Use?
- If your U.S. iPhone 14 or newer has no SIM tray, eSIM is required.
- For international travel, eSIM travel plans are often convenient because they can be activated before arrival.
- If you often swap service between different phones, a physical SIM can still be simpler.
- If your carrier supports it and your iPhone supports it, eSIM is usually the easiest everyday option.
Extra SIM Notes
Region Matters
Apple’s eSIM-only move started with U.S. models. Check your exact model and country before assuming there is no SIM tray.
Erase Carefully
An eSIM can be removed during erase if you choose that option. Transfer or obtain a fresh carrier QR code before wiping the old phone.
Dual SIM Mix
On models with a tray, you may be able to use one physical SIM and one eSIM together if both carriers support the setup.
