Do Not Disturb Not Working on iPhone: How to Fix It

Do Not Disturb not working on iPhone illustration

Do Not Disturb is now part of Focus. If calls or notifications still come through, the Focus may have allowed exceptions. If it will not turn off, schedules, Sleep, or Driving Focus rules may be turning it back on.

This guide applies to iOS 17 and iOS 18 Focus modes.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps if Do Not Disturb allows calls, notifications, or buzzing unexpectedly, or if a Focus remains active longer than expected.

Check What Is Allowed Through

  1. Open Settings > Focus.
  2. Tap the active Focus or Do Not Disturb.
  3. Open People and check who is allowed to notify you.
  4. Open Apps and check which apps are allowed.
  5. Check Allow Calls From. Set it to No One or a specific group if Everyone is too broad.
  6. Turn off Repeated Calls if you do not want a second call within three minutes to ring through.

Turn Off a Stuck Focus

  1. Open Control Center and tap the highlighted Focus icon.
  2. Turn off the active Focus.
  3. If it returns, open that Focus in Settings.
  4. Check Smart Activation and all schedules.
  5. For Sleep Focus, check Health > Sleep for the schedule.
  6. For Driving Focus, set activation to Manually or When Connected to Car Bluetooth if automatic motion detection is wrong.

More Focus Notes

Focus Status

Focus Status can tell contacts that notifications are silenced. It does not stop messages from being delivered.

Silent Delivery Is Normal

Many Focus modes still collect notifications in Notification Center or on the Lock Screen without sound or banner alerts.

Scheduled Summary

Scheduled Summary is separate from Focus and may deliver notifications together later, making it seem like Focus behaved oddly.

Rebuild a Problem Focus

If one Focus has confusing rules, delete it and create it again from Settings > Focus.
