Epson cartridges use a small contact chip that tells the printer the cartridge is installed and reports ink information. If the chip does not make clean contact, the printer may say the cartridge is missing or cannot be recognized even though it is physically in place.

Use this guide if an Epson printer rejects a new cartridge, reports one color missing, or shows a not-recognized message after you removed and reinserted ink.
Remove and reseat the cartridge
Most recognition errors are contact or seating problems.
- Open the cartridge access door and let the carriage move into replacement position.
- Press the specific cartridge showing the error and lift it out.
- Inspect the gold or copper contacts for dust, dried ink, or fingerprints. Wipe gently with a dry lint-free cloth.
- Remove any orange protective tape or seal from a brand-new cartridge.
- Insert the cartridge into the correct slot and press until it clicks fully into place.
- Close the access door and wait while the printer scans the cartridges again.
Rule out incompatible or refilled cartridges
Use these checks if reseating does not clear the message.
- Confirm the cartridge number on the package matches the exact Epson printer model. Similar-looking Epson cartridges are often not interchangeable.
- If using a refilled or third-party cartridge, test with a genuine Epson cartridge if possible. Non-Epson chips can fail to report correctly.
- If a genuine cartridge from a sealed package still fails, power the printer off for 30 seconds and restart it to reset the carriage sensor.
More control
Wait before reinserting
Some Epson models need a short pause after removal. Take the cartridge out, wait about 10 seconds, then insert it slowly and firmly.
One color slot keeps failing
If one slot rejects multiple cartridges, the carriage contacts for that color may be dirty or damaged. The cartridge itself may not be the only issue.
Low ink is a different warning
A low-ink message usually lets you continue for a while. A not-recognized error means the printer cannot read the cartridge chip correctly.
