How to Recover an Email Account You’re Locked Out Of

Most email recovery follows the same pattern: prove ownership with a recovery phone, backup email, trusted device, or account questions, then reset the password. The exact tool depends on the provider.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live.com, Microsoft accounts, Yahoo Mail, and email accounts from internet or cable providers. For Gmail or iCloud, use their dedicated recovery paths.

Recover an Outlook.com or Microsoft account

Outlook, Hotmail, Live.com, and MSN share Microsoft account recovery.

  1. Go to account.live.com/password/reset.
  2. Choose whether you forgot the password or think someone else is using the account.
  3. Enter the Microsoft account email, phone number, or Skype name.
  4. Complete the on-screen verification characters.
  5. Choose a code sent to recovery email or phone if available.
  6. If recovery methods are outdated, use Microsoft’s account recovery form and answer questions about recent emails, folders, contacts, and account details.
  7. After verification, set a new password.

Recover a Yahoo Mail account

Yahoo uses its own sign-in helper.

  1. Open the Yahoo sign-in page.
  2. Choose Forgot username or password or Trouble signing in.
  3. Enter your Yahoo ID, recovery phone, or recovery email.
  4. Use the verification code Yahoo sends to a recovery method.
  5. If recovery info is outdated, follow Yahoo’s alternate identity checks.
  6. Set a new password after verification.

Recover an internet-provider email account

ISP email is handled by the company that provides the address.

  1. Search for the official webmail password reset page for your provider, or open the provider’s account app or website.
  2. Try the provider’s self-service reset.
  3. If it fails, contact the provider’s customer support.
  4. Verify identity through the billing account, service address, account number, or other customer details.
  5. After recovery, add a personal recovery email or phone if the provider offers it.

More control

Expect delays when recovery info is old

Manual or questionnaire-based recovery can take up to 24 hours or longer. That delay is meant to prevent attackers from taking accounts by pretending to be locked out.

Update recovery settings immediately

Once back in, add a current recovery phone and backup email. Then enable two-step verification if the provider supports it.

Check for compromise

Review sent mail, filters, forwarding rules, connected apps, and recent sign-ins. A lockout can be caused by a hacker, not only a forgotten password.
