Dryer noises usually fall into a few patterns: thumping, squeaking, grinding, rattling, or a startup squeal. The sound and timing point toward either a simple trapped object or an internal support part.
This applies to most electric and gas dryers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Frigidaire, and similar brands.

Use this if the dryer suddenly sounds louder, repeats a squeak every drum rotation, thumps with each turn, or squeals when it starts.
Check for trapped objects or load problems
- Stop the dryer.
- Check the drum for coins, buttons, lighters, pens, bra underwires, or loose hardware.
- Run your hand carefully around the drum seal and front opening.
- Remove anything caught or melted against the drum.
- Check whether one bulky item is causing an unbalanced thump.
- Add a few towels to balance a small heavy load or dry bulky items as your manual recommends.
- Clean the lint trap so airflow noise is not mistaken for a mechanical problem.
Rhythmic squeak or thump: rollers or glides
A squeak or thump that repeats with drum rotation and worsens over weeks often comes from worn drum rollers or glides. The drum rides on these parts, and once they flatten, crack, or dry out, the drum stops moving smoothly.
First rule out loose objects because they can sound similar. If the support parts are worn, replacement requires opening the cabinet and handling the drum belt. The parts may be inexpensive, but the labor is more involved.
Startup squeal: belt or idler pulley
A squeal right when the dryer starts often points to a worn drive belt or dry idler pulley bearing. If the belt eventually breaks, the motor may run but the drum will not turn.
The belt and pulley are inside the cabinet around the drum and motor. Use a technician unless you are comfortable following your exact model’s service manual.
A rattling blower wheel can cause scraping or weak airflow. A steady high-pitched whine can point to motor bearings. For gas dryers, never attempt gas line or burner repairs yourself.
