A dishwasher that does nothing when you press Start may be blocked by a door latch, Control Lock, power issue, float switch, or water supply problem before any internal part has failed.
This applies to most built-in dishwashers from Whirlpool, Bosch, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, and similar brands.

Use this if there are no lights, no sound, no water, or no cycle after pressing Start.
Check the door latch and controls
- Open the door fully and close it firmly until it clicks.
- Look for a Control Lock or Child Lock icon.
- Hold the lock button or model-specific button combination for about 3 seconds if it is enabled.
- Select a cycle and press Start again.
- On models that begin after closing the door, make sure Start was pressed before closing.
- If the display is completely blank, move to power checks.
Check power to the dishwasher
- Check the kitchen or dishwasher breaker and reset it once if tripped.
- Look under the sink for a wall or cabinet switch that controls dishwasher power.
- If the dishwasher plugs into an outlet under the sink, confirm the plug is seated.
- Reset any GFCI outlet on that circuit.
- Test an accessible outlet with a lamp or charger if possible.
Turn power off at the breaker before touching anything behind the lower access panel. If you smell burning or see scorch marks near an outlet, cord, or wiring, stop and call an electrician.
Check the float and water supply
- Open the dishwasher and find the small dome-shaped float on the tub floor.
- Lift or twist off the float cap if your model allows it.
- Clean food debris from around the float stem.
- Move the float up and down to make sure it is not stuck.
- Confirm the water supply valve under the sink is fully open.
If the door latches, power is confirmed, the float moves, and water is available, an internal electrical part may be stopping the machine. Common suspects include the door latch switch, thermal fuse, or main control board.
A thermal fuse may trip once after overheating and cut power to the controls. Do not bypass it. If the dishwasher is under warranty or the problem points inside the door or control area, have a technician test it.
