The detergent cup is supposed to pop open partway through the wash. When the flap stays shut, detergent never reaches the dishes and the load comes out dirty or chalky.
This applies to built-in dishwashers with spring-loaded or electronically released detergent dispenser doors from Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag, and similar brands.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the detergent cup is still full after a normal wash cycle, or a pod remains trapped inside the dispenser.
Clear buildup around the latch and hinge
- Open the dishwasher door and locate the detergent cup.
- Feel around the flap, hinge, and latch for gritty dried detergent.
- Scrub the latch tab, hinge, and cup rim with warm water and an old toothbrush.
- Open and close the flap by hand until it springs freely.
- Run a normal short test cycle and check whether the door releases partway through.
Check for a blocked path or overfilled cup
- Move tall dishes, pot handles, and utensils away from the dispenser door.
- Make sure the lower rack leaves space for the flap to swing open.
- Do not pack powder above the fill line.
- Place pods flat in the cup instead of wedging them against the latch.
- Put rinse aid in the rinse-aid reservoir and detergent in the main cup.
Before doing hands-on checks, turn the dishwasher off at the wall switch or breaker. If you will check hoses or water connections, shut off the water supply too.

- Do not work around standing water with power on.
- If the dishwasher is under warranty, smells hot or electrical, leaks heavily, or needs internal door or pump work, call support or an appliance technician.
Do not reach into the dispenser during an active cycle. Pause or cancel and wait for spray to stop before opening the door.
Some rinse-only or very short cycles are not meant to release detergent at all. Check the manual if the problem appears only on one cycle.
If the dispenser is clean and unobstructed but opens too early or not at all, the spring, latch, solenoid, or actuator may have failed. These parts are built into the door and connected to controls, so service is the better path if you are not comfortable opening the door panel.
