Discord usually fails to launch because an old process is still running after a crash or update. It can also be caused by corrupted cache, a stuck updater, or security software blocking the app.
These steps apply to Discord on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS.
Does this affect you?
Use this if clicking Discord does nothing: no window, no error, and no obvious sign that it started.
Kill stuck Discord processes
On Windows:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Processes tab.
- Find Discord or Discord Helper.
- Right-click each one and choose End task.
- Open Discord again from Start or the desktop shortcut.
On Mac:
- Press Command+Option+Esc.
- Select Discord in Force Quit Applications.
- Click Force Quit.
- Open Discord again from the Dock or Applications folder.
Clear Discord cache
On Windows:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type %appdata%discord and press Enter.
- Delete the Cache and Code Cache folders.
- Leave the rest of the Discord folder alone.
- Relaunch Discord.
On Mac:
- Open Finder.
- Press Command + Shift + G.
- Go to ~/Library/Application Support/discord.
- Delete Cache and Code Cache.
- Relaunch Discord.
Clearing cache does not remove servers, friends, account data, or message history.
Reinstall Discord cleanly
- On Windows, uninstall Discord from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- On Mac, drag Discord from Applications to the Trash.
- Restart the computer.
- Download the latest installer from discord.com/download.
- Install Discord and sign in again.
Your Discord data lives on Discord’s servers, so a clean app reinstall does not erase your account.
Updates, antivirus, and workaround
Install pending Windows or macOS updates if Discord stopped launching after an operating system change.
Check antivirus quarantine or blocked items if Discord disappeared right after an update.
While fixing the desktop app, use discord.com/app in a browser with the same account.
