Discord Black Screen? How to Fix a Blank App Window

A black Discord window usually means the desktop app is running but failing to draw its interface. The most common cause is hardware acceleration conflicting with a graphics driver.

These steps apply to the Discord desktop app on Windows and macOS.

Use this if Discord opens to a blank or black window instead of showing servers, chats, and controls.

Turn off hardware acceleration

  1. If you can see part of Discord, click the gear icon for User Settings.
  2. If the window is fully black, press Ctrl+R to reload the app first.
  3. Go to Advanced.
  4. Turn off Hardware Acceleration.
  5. Let Discord restart when prompted.

Disabling hardware acceleration makes Discord render through the CPU instead of relying as heavily on the GPU. It may use slightly more CPU, but it is often more stable.

Disable it without opening Discord

On Windows:

  1. Quit Discord from the system tray.
  2. Press Windows key + R.
  3. Open %appdata%discordsettings.json.
  4. Find DANGEROUS_ENABLE_HARDWARE_ACCELERATION and change true to false.
  5. If the line is missing, add it near the top as false.
  6. Save and reopen Discord.

On Mac:

  1. Quit Discord completely.
  2. Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G.
  3. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/discord/settings.json.
  4. Open it in TextEdit and set DANGEROUS_ENABLE_HARDWARE_ACCELERATION to false.
  5. Save and reopen Discord.

Update graphics drivers

  • Check the GPU model from Advanced display settings on Windows.
  • Update NVIDIA drivers through the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience.
  • Update AMD drivers through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  • Restart the computer before reopening Discord.

If the black screen returns after a Discord update, repeat the hardware acceleration step. Some updates can reset rendering behavior.

Use Discord web while fixing it

Discord at discord.com/app uses the same account, servers, and messages. It is a practical workaround while the desktop app is blank.
