Slow internet can mean low wired speed from Cox, weak Wi-Fi inside the home, overloaded devices, evening congestion, gateway limits, or a local outage. First measure what is actually slow.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Cox internet with a Panoramic Wifi gateway or separate customer-owned modem and router when pages load slowly, streams buffer, or speed tests are far below plan speed.
Test real speed against your plan
A wired test gives the clearest result.
- Connect a laptop or desktop directly to the gateway with Ethernet if possible.
- Pause streaming, backups, downloads, and other heavy traffic.
- Run a speed test from a reliable site or the Panoramic Wifi app.
- Compare with the plan speed on your Cox bill or account.
- A result within about 20 to 30 percent of plan speed can be normal; far lower suggests a real issue.
Restart gateway and check outages
Use this if the test is poor or service changed suddenly.
- Check the Panoramic Wifi app or Cox outage page from cellular data.
- If no outage appears, unplug the gateway for 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait 3 to 5 minutes for online lights.
- Run the speed test again.
Fix common Wi-Fi slowdowns
If wired speed is good but Wi-Fi is bad, focus indoors.
- Use the app to see how many devices are connected.
- Move the gateway into a more central, open location.
- Make sure band steering or Smart Connect is enabled if available.
- Update firmware on customer-owned routers and replace routers that cannot handle your plan speed.
- Retest in the room where you actually use Wi-Fi.
More control
Evening slowdowns may be neighborhood congestion
Cable networks can slow during busy 7 to 11 PM windows even when your equipment is fine.
Check data usage
Some Cox plans include data caps or policy limits. Check usage in the app or account if speeds changed late in the billing cycle.
Ask about gateway replacement
If wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi remains bad on an older rental gateway, Cox may swap the gateway.
