A Copilot+ PC is not simply any Windows laptop with the Copilot app installed. It is Microsoft’s label for Windows 11 laptops that meet a specific hardware standard for running certain AI features locally on the device.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you are shopping for a Windows laptop and keep seeing Copilot+ PC branding on Qualcomm, Intel, or AMD models. The label can be useful, but only if you know what hardware and features it actually represents.
What actually makes a laptop a Copilot+ PC
The main requirement is dedicated AI hardware, not just a fast processor.
- A qualifying laptop needs an NPU, or Neural Processing Unit, rated at 40 TOPS or more. TOPS means trillion operations per second, and Microsoft uses it as the minimum bar for on-device AI processing.
- Current Copilot+ PCs are built around Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips, Intel Core Ultra 200V chips, or AMD Ryzen AI 300 chips.
- The system also needs Windows 11, at least 16 GB of memory, and at least 256 GB of storage.
- The point of the certification is local AI work. Features that use the NPU can run on the laptop itself instead of sending every task to a cloud service.
What you actually get for it
Copilot+ hardware unlocks Windows features that ordinary Windows 11 PCs may not have.
- Live Captions with translation can caption and translate audio or video playing on the PC using local processing.
- Cocreator in Paint and related image tools use AI inside Microsoft Paint instead of requiring a separate web app.
- Windows Studio Effects improve video calls with features such as blur, eye contact correction, and automatic framing while keeping the workload off the main CPU.
- Recall is designed to let you search back through snapshots of PC activity. Because it raised privacy concerns when announced, Microsoft made it opt-in, off by default, encrypted, and protected by Windows Hello authentication.
- The regular Copilot chatbot does not require a Copilot+ PC. You can use Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, and similar cloud AI tools on most recent Windows 11 laptops.
More control
Battery life may matter more than the AI label
Many Snapdragon X and Intel Core Ultra 200V laptops also deliver stronger battery life than older Windows laptops. For travel or school, that practical benefit may matter more than the AI features themselves.
Watch the chip family
Snapdragon X models use Arm-based Windows. Most common apps work through native versions or emulation, but some older utilities, drivers, niche work software, and games can still have compatibility problems. Intel and AMD Copilot+ PCs use standard x86 Windows hardware and avoid that particular trade-off.
Should you buy one?
Choose a Copilot+ PC if you specifically want features such as Recall, on-device translation, Windows Studio Effects, or the battery-life gains of the new chip platforms. If you mainly want a good laptop that can open Copilot or ChatGPT in a browser, the Copilot+ badge by itself is not a reason to overspend.
