ChatGPT can read uploaded files inside a conversation and answer questions about them. You can summarize a long PDF, compare documents, pull dates from a file, or ask what a spreadsheet contains without manually reading every page first.
Does this affect you?
Use this for ChatGPT on the web, desktop app, or mobile app with free or paid accounts. Upload limits vary by plan.
Upload and summarize a file
The upload control lives beside the message box.
- Open a ChatGPT conversation.
- Click the paperclip icon, or tap the plus button on mobile.
- Choose a file from the computer or phone, or drag and drop it into the chat on desktop.
- Wait until the filename or preview appears above the message box.
- Type a request such as Summarize this document, What are the main points in this PDF, or List every deadline mentioned.
- Send the message and continue asking follow-up questions about the same file.
File types and limits to know
Plan and file details affect what works.
- Supported formats commonly include PDF, Word documents, PowerPoint files, Excel spreadsheets, plain text files, JPG, PNG, and other common image formats.
- Free accounts have lower daily upload limits than Plus, Team, and Pro accounts.
- Very large files and very long documents may hit size or processing limits. ChatGPT may focus on relevant sections rather than treating every page equally.
- Scanned PDFs can work if ChatGPT can read the text from images, but text-based PDFs are more reliable.
- If upload fails, re-save as a standard PDF, reduce file size, or split the document into smaller parts.
More control
Attach multiple files when comparing
You can upload several related files to the same chat and ask ChatGPT to compare them, find differences, combine action items, or pull common themes.
Ask for the format you need
A specific prompt beats summarize this. Ask for five bullets, risks only, dates and deadlines, action items, disputed points, or a plain-language summary for a specific audience.
Be careful with sensitive documents
Uploaded files are sent to OpenAI for processing. Review Settings > Data Controls and your plan’s data terms before uploading medical records, financial account details, IDs, contracts, or confidential work files.
Files stay with the chat
Uploaded files remain attached to that conversation. Deleting the conversation removes access to the file inside ChatGPT going forward.
