When Call of Duty does nothing after you click Play, flashes a black window, or closes before the menu, the cause is usually corrupted files, a launcher update, anti-cheat trouble, or a conflicting background app.
These steps apply to Call of Duty titles on PC through Battle.net or Steam, plus Xbox and PlayStation console installs.

Use this if Call of Duty will not launch, shows an error before the menu, or opens briefly and drops back to desktop or the console home screen.
Verify game files and update the launcher
- Open Battle.net or Steam and install any pending launcher update.
- In Battle.net, select Call of Duty, click the gear or Options menu, and choose Scan and Repair.
- In Steam, right-click the game, open Properties > Local Files or Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Let the scan finish completely, even if it takes a long time.
- Restart the PC after the scan.
- Launch the game from Battle.net or Steam instead of an old desktop shortcut.
If a game update left a damaged or incomplete file, repair usually fixes the launch without a full reinstall.
Close conflicts and check consoles
- Close voice chat overlays, screen recorders, RGB control utilities, and performance overlays one at a time.
- Temporarily check third-party antivirus settings because anti-cheat components can be blocked.
- On Xbox, use Manage game to inspect installed packages or reinstall the smallest required package if offered.
- On PlayStation, highlight the game in Library, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
- Restart the console or PC fully before testing again.
Modern Call of Duty builds load anti-cheat before the game. If that driver is blocked by security software or an outdated Windows component, the game can fail silently.
Free space, Windows updates, and servers
Keep at least 10 to 15 GB free beyond the game’s installed size so it can create temporary files and complete updates.
Install pending Windows updates if the PC version fails right after an update or anti-cheat change.
If the game reaches a login or online-check screen and fails there, check Activision server status before reinstalling. Server-side login trouble can look like a local launch problem after major content updates.
A reinstall is the last resort because Call of Duty downloads are large. Work through repair, launcher, anti-cheat, antivirus, and space checks first.
