Brother Printer Says TN Cartridge Not Recognized – How to Fix It

Brother TN toner cartridge being installed

Brother laser printers read a small chip on each TN toner cartridge. If the printer says the cartridge is not recognized, the cartridge is often not seated all the way, the chip contacts are dirty, or the cartridge is not the correct TN model for that printer.

Does this affect you?

Use this guide if the message appeared right after installing toner, after removing and reinstalling the drum assembly, or after replacing a cartridge with a compatible or refilled TN cartridge.

Reseat the cartridge properly

Brother cartridges need to click into the drum unit firmly before the chip can be read.

  1. Open the front cover and pull out the drum unit assembly with both hands.
  2. Press the locking lever on the drum unit and remove the toner cartridge.
  3. Hold the toner level and gently rock it side to side five or six times to redistribute toner.
  4. Slide the cartridge back into the drum unit until it clicks. A light push may not seat it fully.
  5. Reinstall the drum assembly, close the cover firmly, and wait a few seconds for the printer to read the chip.

Clean the chip contacts

Dust or fingerprints on the chip area can interrupt communication between cartridge and printer.

  1. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit again.
  2. Find the small gold or copper contact points on the cartridge side.
  3. Wipe the contacts gently with a dry lint-free or microfiber cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners.
  4. Wipe the matching contacts inside the drum unit or printer where the chip touches.
  5. Reinstall the cartridge and drum assembly, then test again.

More control

Compatible cartridges can be rejected

Third-party and refilled cartridges may fail after printer firmware changes, even when they fit physically. If a compatible cartridge keeps showing not recognized, the cartridge chip is the first suspect.

Check the exact TN number

Brother uses different TN cartridge numbers and yield versions. A cartridge that looks similar, such as a standard-yield versus high-yield variant, may not be accepted by every model. Confirm the exact supported TN number on Brother Support.

If a genuine cartridge still fails

A genuine Brother cartridge can arrive with a damaged chip. If cleaning and reseating do not help, keep the receipt and packaging lot number and contact Brother support for warranty replacement.
