Before assuming a Whirlpool refrigerator has a bad compressor, check modes, settings, airflow, door seals, and coils. Many warm-fridge calls are caused by something simple and visible.
These steps apply to Whirlpool French-door, side-by-side, and top-freezer refrigerators with electronic controls, especially models from about 2015 and newer.

A Whirlpool refrigerator that runs but will not cool may be in Sabbath Mode, set too warm, packed too tightly, leaking warm air through the gasket, or struggling through dust-caked coils. Deeper issues include evaporator fan or defrost failures.
Rule out the easy causes first
- Check whether Sabbath Mode is on and turn it off using the model-specific button combination.
- Set the refrigerator near 37 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer near 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Clear food away from interior air vents.
- Allow up to 24 hours after a power outage or large grocery load.
- Test door seals with a paper strip and clean or replace weak gaskets.
Unplug the refrigerator before moving it or removing the lower coil grille. Do not open the sealed refrigerant system. Refrigerant repairs require certified service. Get help moving the unit if needed because it is heavy and can tip.
Clean the condenser coils
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Remove the lower grille or access the rear coils, depending on model.
- Vacuum coils with a brush attachment.
- Use a coil brush to clear dust between fins.
- Check that the condenser fan spins freely with power off.
- Restore power and give the refrigerator several hours to recover.
Whirlpool generally recommends coil cleaning about every six months, more often with pets.
If settings, airflow, seals, and coils are good but temperatures remain high, check whether cold air is moving. A failed or iced-over evaporator fan can leave one compartment warmer than the other. Heavy frost behind the freezer panel can indicate a defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fault.
Call a technician if you do not feel cold airflow after basic checks or if sealed-system, evaporator fan, or defrost-system diagnosis is needed.
