Whirlpool refrigerator dispensers route water through a filter before it reaches the door paddle. Slow flow or no flow is therefore often a filter, supply-line, frozen-line, or valve issue rather than the paddle itself.
These steps apply to Whirlpool French-door and side-by-side refrigerators with door-mounted water and ice dispensers.

If the dispenser gives no water or only a trickle, start with the water filter and dispenser lock/settings, then check the supply valve, line, and possible frozen tubing.
Check and replace the water filter
- Check the filter status light if your model has one.
- Replace filters older than about six months or 200 gallons.
- Locate the filter in the upper refrigerator compartment, lower grille, or crisper area.
- Install the exact compatible filter and twist or lock it fully into place.
- Run about four gallons through the dispenser to clear air and carbon dust.
- Reset the filter indicator according to the manual.
Turn off the water shutoff valve before disconnecting any supply line. Unplug the refrigerator before accessing rear valve areas. Stop if you notice burning smells or other electrical symptoms.
Check the water supply line and shutoff valve
- Make sure the shutoff valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink is fully open.
- Look for kinks in the thin plastic or copper supply line.
- If the freezer is set very cold, raise it toward 0 degrees Fahrenheit and allow time for a frozen line to thaw.
- Confirm the refrigerator is fully plugged in and power-cycling did not leave the valve controls stuck.
If pressing the paddle produces no click, hum, or light response, the dispenser switch may be bad. If ice and water dispensing both stopped and supply and filter are fine, a dispenser control board may be involved.
A technician can quickly test the water valve solenoid, dispenser switch, and board with a multimeter. Call for service after filter, shutoff valve, kinked line, and frozen-line checks are ruled out.
