Washing Machine Error Codes: What They Mean and What to Do

Washer error codes vary by brand, but the real problems repeat: water will not drain, water will not enter, the load is unbalanced, the door will not lock, or the motor has stalled. Once you group the code, troubleshooting becomes much clearer.

These steps apply to modern front-load and top-load washers from Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Electrolux, and similar brands.

Does this affect you?

If your washer stopped mid-cycle and shows OE, UE, LE, IE, 4C, dE, FL, Sud, or another short code, write it down exactly and note when it appeared: fill, wash, drain, or spin.

Unplug the washer before opening drain filters or panels. Turn off water valves before disconnecting inlet hoses, and keep towels and a shallow pan ready for standing water.

Drain errors: OE, nd, E2, 5d, Sud

  • Check the drain hose for kinks and proper standpipe depth.
  • Clean the drain pump filter and remove coins, lint, hair ties, or debris.
  • Check nearby household drains if water backs up.
  • For 5d or Sud, use less HE detergent and run an extra rinse to clear foam.
  • Run Drain & Spin after cleaning.

Water supply errors: IE, 4C, E1

  • Make sure hot and cold valves are fully open.
  • Check inlet hoses for kinks.
  • Clean mesh inlet screens where hoses connect to the washer.
  • Compare house water pressure at a nearby faucet.
  • Check the model manual because code letters vary.

Unbalanced load, door lock, and motor errors: UE, dE, FL, LE

  • For UE, Ub, or dU, redistribute the load and avoid single bulky items.
  • For dE, FL, dr, or Lid, close the door or lid firmly and check the latch.
  • For LG LE or motor-stall codes, unplug for five minutes and restart with a smaller load.
  • Level the washer because an unlevel machine can trigger balance and motor-stress codes.

Search the exact model number plus the exact code on the manufacturer support site after identifying the category. Some brands reuse similar letters for different faults.

If the same code returns on an empty test cycle after a reset, or if you notice grinding, burning smells, leaks, or a drum that will not turn, stop running cycles and call an appliance technician.
