A single stove burner that will not heat usually points to a problem specific to that burner, not the whole range. Gas burners and electric burners fail differently, so use the section that matches your cooktop.
These steps apply to gas, electric coil, and smooth-top ranges and cooktops from major brands.
Does this affect you?
Gas burners commonly fail from dirty igniters, blocked ports, or misseated caps. Electric coil burners commonly fail from bad elements or sockets. Multiple dead burners can point to a breaker or control issue.
If you smell gas, stop immediately, do not use switches or flames, leave if the smell is strong, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Never repair gas lines or valves yourself. For electric ranges, turn power off before handling coil elements or sockets.
Gas burner will not light
- Listen for clicking when the knob is turned to ignite.
- After the burner is cool, remove the grate and burner cap.
- Clean clogged burner ports with a soft brush or straightened paperclip. Do not use a toothpick that can break inside.
- Wipe the igniter electrode gently with a dry cloth or soft brush.
- Reseat the burner cap level and in the correct position.
- Test ignition again.
Electric burner will not heat
- For removable coil burners, turn power off and swap the suspect coil with a working burner of the same size.
- If the coil works in another position, replace the coil element.
- If the position still does not heat, inspect the socket or terminal block for burning or corrosion with power off.
- On smooth-top ranges, elements are not swappable. Watch whether the zone glows after 10 to 15 seconds.
- If several burners are affected, check the range breaker and dedicated circuit.
If one burner position never works even with a known-good element, the socket, wiring, relay, or control board for that zone may have failed. On gas ranges, a weak ignition module can affect one or more burners even after cleaning.
Any repair involving gas supply, the main wiring harness, terminal block, or control board should go to a licensed appliance technician.
