A stove that will not turn on can mean different things: a gas burner clicks but never lights, no clicking happens at all, an electric burner stays cold, or the whole range display is dead. Start by identifying which symptom you have.
These steps apply to gas and electric ranges and cooktops from most brands.
Does this affect you?
On gas ranges, clicking without flame is often a dirty igniter or clogged burner port. No click, no flame, or any gas smell requires more caution. On electric ranges, dead burners and dead displays usually point to power, switches, elements, or controls.
If you smell gas, turn knobs off, do not light anything, do not use electrical switches, leave the house if the smell is strong, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Never repair a gas line or valve yourself.
Gas range: clean the igniter and burner ports
- Let the burner cool, then remove the grate and cap.
- Find the igniter tip near the burner base.
- Wipe the igniter with a dry cloth or old toothbrush.
- Clear burner ports gently with a straight pin or needle without enlarging holes.
- Reinstall the cap level and in the correct position.
- Turn the burner to Light and confirm it lights within a few seconds.
Electric range or dead display: check power
- Check the breaker panel. Electric ranges often use a 240-volt double-pole breaker.
- If the range plugs in, confirm the plug is seated and the outlet has power.
- Remember that gas ranges still need electricity for igniters and controls.
- Check whether a child lock or display lock is active.
- If only one electric burner is dead, suspect that burner element or switch rather than whole-range power.
A clean gas igniter that never sparks may point to the spark module. An igniter that sparks but receives no gas can point to a valve or gas supply issue. Do not bypass safety switches or manually force gas troubleshooting.
For electric units, if power is confirmed and the controls still do not respond, the switch, relay, element, or board may need professional testing. Call a technician for gas-supply issues or internal electrical work.
