
If your Maytag refrigerator cools normally but the inside stays dark when the door opens, the failure is usually limited to the light circuit. Start with the small door switch, then check the bulb or LED module before suspecting wiring or the board.
These steps apply to Maytag French-door, side-by-side, and top-freezer refrigerators that use either a traditional appliance bulb or a sealed LED light module.

A refrigerator light needs three things: the door switch has to report that the door is open, the bulb or LED module has to work, and the control circuit has to send power. Most dark-light complaints are caused by the switch not being pressed correctly or by a failed bulb/module.
Check the door switch first
The door switch is a small button or lever in the door frame. It is pressed when the door closes and released when the door opens.
- Open the door and find the switch near the frame, usually close to the top corner or where the gasket meets the cabinet.
- Press and release it by hand. If the light flickers or comes on, the switch works but may not be getting pressed correctly by the door.
- Clean the switch and frame area. Dirt, frost, a shelf liner, or a container in the way can keep the door from making proper contact.
- If pressing the switch by hand does nothing, the switch or wiring behind it may have failed.
Replace the bulb or LED module
Maytag models differ here. Older refrigerators often use a screw-in bulb, while newer ones may use an LED strip or module.
- Unplug the refrigerator before touching the light cover or socket.
- Remove the light cover from the ceiling or side wall by releasing tabs or screws.
- For a standard bulb, unscrew it and replace it with the exact type and wattage listed for the model. Do not use a higher-wattage bulb.
- For a sealed LED module, check the model number and order the matching Maytag/Whirlpool part. Some modules can be unclipped and reconnected if the connector was knocked loose.
- Reinstall the cover, restore power, and test the door.
Check the control board and wiring
If the switch and light source are good, the issue is farther upstream.
- With the refrigerator unplugged, inspect the door-switch connector if it is accessible.
- A loose harness can interrupt the light circuit while cooling continues normally.
- A failed relay or output on the control board can also cut light power.
- A multimeter can confirm whether voltage reaches the socket or module when the door is open.
Always unplug the refrigerator before removing a light cover or touching the socket. Let an old bulb cool before handling it. Do not remove sealed panels or board covers unless you are trained to work safely around appliance wiring.
Find the full model number on the sticker inside the refrigerator compartment before buying parts. Generic refrigerator bulbs and LED modules do not always fit Maytag models correctly.
LED strips cost more than old-style bulbs. If the refrigerator is older and the module is expensive, weigh the repair against the overall condition of the appliance.
Call a technician if the bulb or module and door switch check out but the light still does not work, or if diagnosis requires wiring diagrams and control-board testing.
