A Maytag refrigerator that feels warm, spoils food quickly, or flashes a cooling indicator needs a careful order of checks. Some causes are simple settings or airflow problems; others involve fans, defrost parts, or sealed-system repairs.
These steps apply to many Maytag French-door, side-by-side, and top-freezer refrigerators with electronic controls, especially models from roughly 2015 and newer.

Maytag refrigerators share many Whirlpool design features, but the display can give useful clues. A Cooling Off or Cool indicator may mean cooling was disabled rather than broken, so read the controls before pulling the unit out.
Check the display light and settings
- Look for a Cooling Off, Cool, or Fresh Food indicator. On many models, cooling can be turned off from the panel and must be turned back on with the model-specific button combination.
- Set the refrigerator near 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer near 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Make sure food is not blocking interior air vents on the back wall.
- Test the door gasket by closing the door on a strip of paper. If it slides out with no resistance, clean or replace the gasket.
- If power was lost or a door was left open, allow up to 24 hours for temperatures to recover after settings are corrected.
Unplug the refrigerator before removing the base grille, moving the unit, or cleaning near coils and fans. Do not open the sealed refrigerant system; sealed-system work requires an EPA-certified technician. Get help moving the fridge because it is heavy and can tip.
Clean the condenser coils and check the fan
Dusty condenser coils are one of the most common preventable reasons a refrigerator runs warm.
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Remove the lower front grille or rear access area, depending on model.
- Vacuum dust and pet hair with a brush attachment.
- Use a coil-cleaning brush to reach between fins and deeper areas.
- Check that the condenser fan spins freely by hand while power is off.
- Reinstall the grille, plug the refrigerator back in, and give it several hours to cool.
Cleaning coils every six months, or more often with pets, can prevent many warm-fridge service calls.
If settings are right, cooling mode is on, vents are clear, seals are good, and coils are clean, the cause may be inside the freezer compartment. An evaporator fan failure can leave the freezer cold while the fresh-food section warms. Heavy frost behind the freezer panel can point to a defrost heater, thermostat, or timer problem that blocks airflow.
Evaporator fan and defrost diagnosis requires removing interior panels and testing parts. If the visible checks do not restore cooling, call an appliance technician, especially while the refrigerator is under warranty.
