Ice Maker Won’t Stop Making Ice? How to Fix It

If the ice maker keeps making cubes after the bin is full, the shutoff signal is not getting through. The result can be an overflowing bin, spilled cubes in the freezer, or a jammed dispenser that cannot move packed ice.

These steps apply to built-in refrigerator ice makers using either a mechanical shutoff arm or an electronic optical sensor, including many Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid models.

The ice maker should stop when the bin is full. Older units use a wire arm that lifts as ice piles up. Newer units may use an infrared beam or optical sensor. If the bin is crooked, the arm is stuck, the sensor is dirty, or ice blocks the sensing path, the ice maker keeps cycling.

Check the bin position and shutoff arm

Start here because the ice maker cannot sense a full bin if the bin is not sitting where it belongs.

  1. Remove the ice bin, clear loose ice, and slide the bin back in fully so it sits level and all the way back.
  2. Look for a wire shutoff arm on the side or bottom of the ice maker.
  3. Move the arm gently through its range. It should lift and lower smoothly without sticking.
  4. Clear ice around the arm, sensor, or bin track. A small chunk can block the full-bin signal.

Turn off the ice maker or unplug the refrigerator before putting your hands near the mechanism. Avoid the auger and dispenser parts, and use a plastic tool rather than metal if you need to loosen packed ice.

Check the optical sensor

Electronic ice makers use a small beam instead of a wire arm. A dirty or blocked sensor can misread the bin.

  1. Switch off the ice maker or unplug the refrigerator.
  2. Find the sensor pair, usually small dark lenses on the front or side of the ice maker area.
  3. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth.
  4. Clear frost, cubes, or a crooked bin from the beam path.
  5. Restore power and watch the next cycles to see whether the unit stops when the bin fills.

Reset the ice maker

A reset can clear a temporary sensing glitch.

  • Turn the ice maker off using its switch, paddle, control-panel setting, or app control and leave it off for a few minutes.
  • If there is no dedicated switch, unplug the refrigerator for five minutes.
  • Empty the bin completely, including fused clumps, so the sensor starts from a clean empty-bin state.
  • Turn the ice maker back on and monitor the next couple of cycles.

If the arm moves freely and the optical sensor is clean but the ice maker still overproduces, the sensor module or ice maker control may have failed. Those are usually replaceable parts.

A water inlet valve stuck partially open can also send extra water into the ice maker, which may look like excess production or create watery, misshapen ice. That is a different repair from a shutoff sensor problem.

If bin seating, shutoff arm, sensor cleaning, and reset do not fix it, call an appliance technician. The ice maker module, optical sensor, and inlet valve can be tested and replaced more reliably with the model number and proper tools.
