Ice Maker Stopped Working: How to Get It Making Ice Again

When the ice bin stays empty and the ice maker no longer clicks, fills, or drops cubes, start with the basics. Many stopped ice makers are turned off, too warm, blocked from water, or waiting after a recent temperature change.

These steps apply to most built-in ice makers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, and similar refrigerator brands.

A completely silent ice maker usually traces to the switch, freezer temperature, water supply, filter, inlet valve, fill tube, or ice maker module. Working in order keeps you from replacing the ice maker when the problem is actually a closed valve or warm freezer.

Check the on/off switch and freezer temperature

These two causes are common and quick to verify.

  1. Find the ice maker switch, control-panel setting, or wire shutoff arm. Make sure the switch is on or the arm is lowered into the on position.
  2. Check freezer temperature. Most ice makers need about 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder to cycle normally.
  3. If the freezer has warmed from a door left open, a large load of groceries, or a power interruption, give it up to 24 hours at the proper temperature before continuing.
  4. If the display or thermometer shows warmer than 0 degrees, adjust the setting colder and wait.

Check the water supply line and filter

No water reaching the ice maker means there is nothing to freeze.

  • Make sure the water shutoff valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink is fully open.
  • Replace the refrigerator water filter if it is old, clogged, or past the six-month recommendation.
  • Inspect the thin plastic or copper water line behind the refrigerator for kinks, especially if the fridge was recently moved.
  • If the refrigerator has a water dispenser, test it. No dispenser water usually confirms a supply problem rather than an ice-maker-only issue.

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any line or changing parts, and unplug the refrigerator before reaching behind or underneath it. Keep hands away from the ejector arm and moving ice maker parts while testing.

Check the water inlet valve and reset the ice maker

If temperature and water supply are good, the fill valve or ice maker control may need attention.

  • Locate the inlet valve near the lower rear of the refrigerator where the water line enters.
  • With power disconnected, inspect for corrosion, cracks, or visible leakage. Electrical testing requires a multimeter.
  • Look for a reset button or reset sequence in the refrigerator manual. Some models have a red button on the ice maker; others reset from the control panel.
  • After reset, allow up to 24 hours for the next ice cycle.

A frozen fill tube can also stop ice completely. If the tube that feeds the mold is iced shut, a full defrost with the refrigerator unplugged and freezer door open for several hours may clear it. Never chip near freezer walls with sharp tools.

Ice makers eventually wear out as self-contained modules with motors and small controls. If switch position, freezer temperature, water supply, filter, fill tube, and reset all check out, module replacement may be the actual repair.

Call a technician if you are not comfortable testing the inlet valve, if the refrigerator is under warranty, or if diagnosing the problem requires opening panels.
