Dishwashers clean by spraying water, not by soaking dishes in place. If the spray cannot reach a surface, detergent cannot rescue the load.
This applies to standard two-rack built-in dishwashers from Bosch, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, and similar brands.
Does this affect you?
Use this if dishes come out with food still stuck on them and the machine otherwise fills, washes, and drains normally.
Load the bottom rack
- Place plates and bowls face-down and angled toward the center.
- Leave gaps between items so water can pass.
- Put pots, pans, and platters around the edges.
- Keep large items from blocking the center spray arm.
- Make sure nothing sticks below or above the rack in a way that stops spray arm rotation.
Load the top rack and silverware
- Place cups and glasses upside down and slightly angled.
- Avoid forcing stemware straight over upright tines where vibration can crack it.
- Use the top rack for dishwasher-safe plastics and delicate items.
- Mix forks and spoons up and down so they do not nest together.
- Load knives blade-down for safer unloading.
Modern detergent is designed to work with some food soil. Scrape large solids into the trash, but you usually do not need to pre-rinse plates spotless.
Do not overload the racks. A crammed load blocks water throughout the machine, not just around the extra bowl. Hand-wash wood, cast iron, delicate painted pieces, metal-trimmed items, and non-dishwasher-safe plastics.
Run the kitchen hot tap until warm before starting the dishwasher. Hot first-fill water helps detergent dissolve and clean properly.
