How to Make Your Appliances Last Longer

Most appliances fail early because of buildup, strain, poor airflow, hard-water scale, or small warning signs that were ignored. A few repeat habits can add years of useful life.

This applies to major home appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, and ovens under normal residential use.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you just bought an appliance or want your current ones to reach their expected lifespan instead of wearing out early.

Maintenance that matters most

  • Refrigerator: vacuum condenser coils twice a year and keep door gaskets clean and tight.
  • Dryer: clean the lint filter every load and the full vent duct yearly.
  • Washer: run a monthly cleaning cycle and leave front-load doors open between loads.
  • Dishwasher: clean the filter monthly so the pump is not fighting trapped food.
  • Range and oven: keep gas burner ports, igniters, and electric elements free of baked-on spills.

Habits that prevent early failure

  • Do not overload washers, dryers, or dishwashers.
  • Fix small symptoms early, such as slow drains, new rattles, longer run times, or extra vibration.
  • Keep washers and refrigerators level.
  • Give refrigerators and dryers enough clearance for airflow.
  • Register appliances with the manufacturer for recall and service updates.

Monthly: clean the dishwasher filter, run a washer clean cycle, and check refrigerator door seals with the dollar-bill test. Twice a year: vacuum fridge coils, clean the range hood filter, and inspect washer hoses for bulges or cracks.

Long dryer vents may need professional cleaning. Gas dryers and gas ranges are worth professional checks if you suspect connection, ignition, or combustion issues.

Once a well-maintained appliance approaches 10 to 15 years and starts needing repeated repairs, compare repair cost with replacement instead of assuming maintenance can stretch it forever.
