A disposal that spins normally but does not grind is different from a jam. The motor and plate are moving, but the impellers, grind ring, water flow, or drain path are not doing their job.
This applies to InSinkErator, GE, Waste King, Moen, and similar disposals under standard kitchen sinks.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the disposal sounds like it runs at full speed, but food stays in the chamber instead of being chopped and flushed away.
Safety first
- Turn off the switch and unplug the disposal or switch off its breaker before inspecting it.
- Never put your hand inside the disposal.
- Use a flashlight and tongs to nudge or remove visible items.
- Run cold water during normal disposal use so grease stays firmer and clears better.
Check grinding components
- Look into the chamber with a flashlight.
- Find the two swiveling impellers on the spinning plate.
- Use tongs to nudge each impeller gently.
- They should swing freely on their pivots.
- Look for rust, scale, broken lugs, or impellers stuck in place.
- Inspect the grind ring around the wall for worn, smooth, or polished surfaces.
- Test with a small soft food item and strong cold water flow.
Check water flow and drain path
- Use a strong stream of water, not a trickle.
- Feed food slowly instead of dumping a large amount at once.
- Avoid celery, corn husks, onion skins, and other fibrous scraps.
- Check for a partial downstream clog if food backs up after a few seconds.
- Clear the trap or drain line if waste cannot leave the chamber.
A worn grind ring is not sharpened like a knife. If the ring and impellers are worn smooth, or an older motor has lost torque, replacement usually makes more sense than internal repair, especially on units older than 8 to 10 years.
