Garbage Disposal Stopped Working? How to Fix It

A disposal that will not run is usually either tripped, jammed, or missing power. A hum with no grinding means the motor is trying to turn against a jam. Silence usually means reset or power.

This applies to most under-sink garbage disposals from InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen, GE, and similar brands.

Does this affect you?

Use this if flipping the switch gives no sound, a low hum, or no grinding movement.

Try the reset button

  1. Turn off the wall switch.
  2. Look at the bottom of the disposal for a small red or black reset button.
  3. Press it firmly until it clicks.
  4. Run cold water.
  5. Turn the disposal on briefly.
  6. If it hums but does not spin, clear a jam next.

Clear a jam with the hex wrench

  1. Turn off the switch and unplug the disposal or switch off the breaker.
  2. Find the hex-shaped hole in the bottom center of the unit.
  3. Insert the disposal wrench or matching Allen wrench.
  4. Turn firmly back and forth until the plate moves freely.
  5. Remove visible debris from above with tongs, never fingers.
  6. Press reset again.
  7. Restore power and test with cold water running.

Check outlet, GFCI, and breaker

  • If the unit is silent, make sure it is plugged in under the sink.
  • Test the under-sink outlet with another small device if accessible.
  • Reset any nearby GFCI outlet.
  • Check the kitchen or disposal breaker.
  • If the unit is hardwired, have switch and wiring problems checked by an electrician.

If the wrench turns freely but the disposal still hums, or the reset trips repeatedly, the motor may be failing. Repeat jams often come from fibrous scraps, grease, coffee grounds, bones, or overloading. If clearing and resetting do not hold, call a plumber or appliance technician.
