Automatic defrost keeps frost from blocking the freezer’s evaporator coils. When it fails, ice builds behind the freezer wall, airflow drops, the fridge side warms up, and the fan may scrape against ice.
This applies to top-freezer, bottom-freezer, and French-door refrigerators from Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, and similar brands with automatic defrost.

Defrost safely and confirm the pattern
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Move food to a cooler with ice packs.
- Open both doors.
- Lay towels where meltwater will collect.
- Let the ice melt for several hours or overnight.
- Use a fan aimed into the freezer to speed melting if needed.
- Dry the compartment, plug the fridge back in, and note the date.
- If thick ice returns within 1 to 3 weeks, the automatic defrost system likely failed.
Never chip ice with a knife, screwdriver, or sharp tool. The evaporator coils and refrigerant lines sit behind the ice, and puncturing them can ruin the refrigerator.
Know the likely failed parts
- Defrost heater: melts frost from the evaporator coils. If it burns out, ice keeps accumulating.
- Defrost thermostat or thermistor: tells the control when coils are cold enough to defrost and warm enough to stop.
- Defrost timer or adaptive control board: schedules or commands the defrost cycle.
- Evaporator fan: can become blocked by ice or fail separately, reducing airflow.
These parts sit behind the freezer’s inner rear panel near electrical parts and the cooling system. Testing them correctly usually requires a multimeter and model-specific service information.
Check for a frozen defrost drain
- During or after defrost, look for a small drain hole at the bottom of the freezer back area.
- Flush the drain with warm, not boiling, water using a turkey baster or flexible tubing if reachable.
- Confirm water reaches the drain pan near the compressor.
- If clearing the drain stops the ice problem, the heater and control may be fine.
If ice returns quickly or food temperatures are unsafe, call a technician. Repeating manual defrosts every few weeks is a workaround, not a fix.
