A refrigerator should run, cool, then cycle off. If the compressor hums almost nonstop, the fridge is either losing cold air, struggling to release heat, fighting poor airflow, or dealing with an internal cooling problem.
This applies to freestanding and built-in refrigerators from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, and similar brands.

Clean coils and check seals
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Pull it away from the wall or remove the lower front grille.
- Vacuum dust and pet hair from the condenser coils.
- Check fridge and freezer gaskets with a dollar bill or strip of paper.
- Clean gaskets with warm soapy water and dry them.
- Replace torn, cracked, or loose gaskets.
- Confirm the fridge has proper rear, side, and top clearance.
Let the compressor area cool before touching it. Dirty coils trap heat and make the compressor work much harder.
Check placement, settings, and airflow
- Move the refrigerator away from direct sunlight, ovens, dishwashers, or heat vents where possible.
- Set the refrigerator to about 37F and the freezer to about 0F.
- Keep internal air vents clear of boxes and containers.
- Avoid packing shelves edge-to-edge so cold air can circulate.
- Give the fridge several hours to recover after a large grocery load or long door-open period.
If coils are clean, seals are tight, settings are normal, and the compressor still never rests, the problem may be deeper. Ice on the evaporator, a failing fan, or a defrost fault can block internal airflow.
A slow refrigerant leak can also make the compressor run continuously. In the U.S., sealed refrigerant-system work requires proper equipment and certification. Call an appliance technician if nonstop running comes with poor cooling, a hot compressor, new loud noise, or a clear energy-bill jump.
