When both the fridge and freezer are silent, dark, and not cooling, start with power. A dead outlet, tripped GFCI, breaker, loose plug, or control reset is more common than a failed compressor.
This applies to standard refrigerator-freezers plugged into a wall outlet from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, and similar brands.

Use this if there is no interior light, display, compressor hum, fan noise, or cooling from either compartment.
Safety first
- Keep hands dry around outlets and breaker panels.
- Do not use an outlet or cord with scorch marks, melting, or a burning smell.
- Call an electrician if you are uncomfortable checking a panel or outlet.
- Keep doors closed while troubleshooting so cold air stays inside as long as possible.
Check the power supply
- Plug a lamp or charger into the same outlet.
- Reset any nearby kitchen GFCI outlet.
- Check the breaker labeled kitchen or refrigerator.
- Move a tripped breaker fully off, then back on.
- Make sure the fridge plug is fully seated.
- Inspect the cord for visible damage.
- Use a properly rated appliance extension cord only as a brief test, not as a permanent setup.
Reset the control board
- Unplug the refrigerator for a full 5 minutes.
- While unplugged, check that the temperature control is not set to Off.
- Plug it back in.
- Listen for the compressor or fans after a minute.
- Allow for a built-in compressor delay of several minutes on some models.
- Check the manual for Demo or Showroom Mode if lights and display work but cooling does not.
If power is confirmed and a reset does not help, the issue may be a control board, thermal fuse, start relay, or compressor start problem. A faint click every few minutes can point to a start relay issue.
Internal electrical and sealed-system checks require service. While waiting, avoid opening doors. A closed, well-stocked freezer can keep food cold for several hours, but follow food-safety guidance if temperatures rise.
