Freezer Not Freezing Properly? How to Fix It

A freezer that is cold but not freezing solid usually has an airflow, door seal, temperature setting, frost, or defrost problem. It is different from a refrigerator that is completely dead and silent.

This applies to top-freezer, bottom-freezer, and side-by-side refrigerators from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, and similar brands.

Does this affect you?

Use this if ice cream stays soft, ice cubes are slushy, or frozen food is cold but not solid.

Check settings and airflow first

  • Set the freezer to 0F or -18C.
  • Do not pack the freezer so tightly that cold air cannot circulate.
  • Keep vents between the freezer and refrigerator area clear.
  • Check that bags, boxes, or containers are not holding the door open.
  • Test the gasket by closing the door on a strip of paper and feeling for resistance.
  • Look for thick frost on the back or top wall.

Unplug before wiping meltwater or doing a manual defrost. Never chip ice with a knife, screwdriver, or sharp tool because puncturing a cooling coil can ruin the refrigerator. Do not remove the freezer’s inner back panel for these basic checks.

Do a full manual defrost

  1. Move food to another freezer or cooler.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off.
  3. Prop the fridge and freezer doors open.
  4. Lay towels to catch meltwater.
  5. Let it sit for 24 hours so hidden frost can melt completely.
  6. Wipe dry, plug back in, and give it 24 hours to stabilize.
  7. Reload food only after temperatures return to safe levels.

If the freezer works normally after defrosting but frosts up again within a few weeks, the automatic defrost system or evaporator fan may have failed.

A failed defrost heater, timer, or thermostat can rebuild ice quickly. A noisy or stopped evaporator fan can also prevent cold air from circulating. These parts sit behind the inner panel near the cooling system, so use a technician.
