A burning rubber smell from a dryer can come from overheated lint, a slipping belt, a melted object in the drum, or an electrical problem. If the smell is gas rather than rubber, treat it as an emergency.
This applies to electric and gas dryers from LG, Samsung, Maytag, Whirlpool, GE, and similar brands.

Safety first
- If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur, stop the dryer, leave the house, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Do not touch light switches, appliance controls, or anything electrical if you suspect a gas leak.
- For any burning smell, stop using the dryer and unplug it or turn off its breaker until the cause is found.
- Do not restart if you see scorch marks, smoke, sparks, or overheated lint.
- Let the dryer cool before checking the drum, vent, or lint area.
Check lint trap and vent
- Clean the lint screen thoroughly.
- Check the vent hose behind the dryer for kinks, crushing, or disconnection.
- Clean the full duct to the outside if it has not been cleaned within the past year.
- Check the exterior vent hood for lint, debris, nests, or a stuck flap.
- After the vent path is clear, run an empty cycle briefly and see whether the smell returns.
Check for objects or a worn belt
- With the dryer unplugged and cool, inspect the drum for coins, crayons, pens, plastic, or melted material.
- Run your hand around the drum seal for trapped objects.
- Remove melted residue with a plastic scraper, not a metal tool.
- A burning tire smell plus squealing can point to a slipping drive belt or pulley.
- Belt replacement usually requires opening the dryer cabinet, so use a technician if you are not experienced with the model.
If the vent is clear and nothing is stuck in the drum, the smell may be electrical. Motor bearings, heating elements, and loose wiring can overheat without an obvious visible cause. Stop using the dryer and have it inspected if the smell continues, especially with buzzing, humming, smoke, or scorch marks.
