A dryer that starts normally but quits after a few minutes is often overheating and tripping a protective thermostat or thermal fuse. Restricted airflow is the first place to look.
This applies to most electric and gas dryers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Frigidaire, and similar brands.

Use this if the dryer begins a cycle, runs briefly, then stops silently or with a beep before the load is dry.
Clean the lint trap and vent hose
- Unplug the dryer before moving it.
- Remove lint from the screen.
- Wash the screen with warm soapy water if it has a waxy film from dryer sheets.
- Pull the dryer away from the wall.
- Check the vent hose for sharp bends, crushed sections, or compacted lint.
- Look into the dryer exhaust port and remove accessible lint.
- Reconnect the hose securely without crushing it.
For gas dryers, do not touch the gas line during a vent check. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility or emergency service from outside.
Clean the full vent run
- Check the exterior vent cap while the dryer runs. The flap should open strongly.
- Use a dryer vent brush kit for a short, straight duct.
- Hire vent cleaning for long runs, roof vents, or ducts with several bends.
- Run a full cycle after cleaning to confirm the dryer no longer shuts off.
- Clean the full vent at least yearly, and more often with heavy use.
Rule out door switch and thermal fuse
- Open and close the door firmly a few times, then test another cycle.
- If pressing the door harder keeps it running, the door switch may be worn.
- If airflow is clear but the dryer still quits, a thermal fuse or thermostat may be tripping.
- Never bypass or jumper a thermal fuse.
- If more than one fuse trips in a short time, the underlying overheating cause has not been fixed.
A thermostat can fail and cause repeated overheating even with a clear vent. On gas models, burner or ignition issues must be handled by a qualified technician. Call service if the vent is clean and the dryer still shuts off.
