A dishwasher that runs but never fills is usually being starved of water or being told by the float system that the tub is already full. Start with the simple valve and float checks before replacing anything.
This applies to most Whirlpool, Bosch, GE, Samsung, LG, and similar built-in dishwashers.

Quick checks before opening anything
- Open the cabinet under the sink and make sure the dishwasher water supply valve is fully on.
- Open the dishwasher and check for standing water from the previous cycle.
- Find the plastic float on the tub floor.
- Lift and drop the float several times to make sure it moves freely.
- Start a cycle and listen for a faint hum or hiss from the fill valve.
Before doing hands-on checks, turn the dishwasher off at the wall switch or breaker. If you will check hoses or water connections, shut off the water supply too.

- Do not work around standing water with power on.
- If the dishwasher is under warranty, smells hot or electrical, leaks heavily, or needs internal door or pump work, call support or an appliance technician.
Check the float switch assembly
- Lift or unscrew the float cap if your model allows it.
- Clean food debris and grime around the float post.
- Reinstall it and confirm it moves up and down.
- If the float moves freely but the machine still will not fill, the switch underneath may have failed.
Check the water inlet valve
- Turn off power and water.
- Remove the lower toe-kick panel.
- Find the inlet valve where the household water line connects.
- Inspect the inlet screen for sediment or mineral buildup.
- Clean visible debris carefully.
- Look for corrosion, scale, cracks, or a valve that hums but does not open.
A clogged countertop air gap is more commonly a drain problem, but it is worth checking if your dishwasher uses one. A loose door latch can also prevent filling because the dishwasher may not believe the door is closed.
If supply, float, latch, and visible inlet checks all pass, have a technician test the inlet valve and control board directly.
