Renters need smart-home devices that work without drilling, rewiring, replacing landlord hardware, or risking a security deposit. Fortunately, many useful devices are plug-in, battery-powered, or adhesive-mounted.
These ideas apply to renters in apartments or houses using devices that do not require permanent modifications.

No-drill devices that plug in or stick on
- Smart plugs plug into existing outlets and can schedule lamps, fans, holiday lights, and simple appliances.
- Smart bulbs screw into existing lamps or fixtures without wiring, though the physical switch must stay on for smart control.
- Smart speakers and displays such as Echo, Nest, or HomePod plug in and move with you.
- Battery motion, door/window, and water leak sensors can mount with removable adhesive strips.
- Robotic switch toppers can press an existing light switch without rewiring it.
Use damage-free mounting strips instead of permanent adhesive when possible. Take photos before installing anything so move-out condition is easy to prove.
Smart locks for renters
Full deadbolt replacements are often not renter-friendly. Look for retrofit locks that mount on the inside over the existing thumb-turn and keep the exterior keyway untouched.
- Confirm the lock does not replace the deadbolt cylinder.
- Check that it removes cleanly at move-out.
- Read the lease before installing anything on an entry door.
- Ask the landlord in writing if the lease is unclear.
A retrofit lock gives app or voice control without changing the lock hardware the landlord owns.
Take the setup with you
- Favor devices tied to your personal Amazon, Google, Apple, Wyze, Kasa, or similar account.
- Before moving, remove devices from the old Wi-Fi or home in their apps.
- Set them up again on the new network.
- Keep QR codes, setup cards, and manuals.
- For Matter devices, check whether the app offers Move to a New Home before factory resetting.
Wi-Fi plugs, bulbs, speakers, and sensors usually pack like any small appliance. Hub-free ecosystems reduce the number of boxes and bridges you need to set up again.
