A Ring doorbell battery that will not charge is usually caused by the cable, power source, charging port, deep discharge, or an aging battery.
These steps apply to battery-powered Ring Video Doorbell models, including Video Doorbell, 2, 3, 3 Plus, and 4.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the charging light does not show progress or the battery percentage in the Ring app stays flat after plugging the doorbell in.
Rule out the cable and power source
- Remove the doorbell from its mounting bracket.
- Locate the micro-USB charging port on the back or bottom.
- Try a different USB cable.
- Use a wall USB adapter instead of a computer or hub.
- Inspect the cable connector for fraying or looseness.
- Check the charging port for dust, lint, or corrosion.
- Clear debris gently with compressed air or a toothpick.
- Leave it connected long enough to confirm whether charging starts.
A worn cable can look normal but fail to deliver steady power. Outdoor dust or corrosion can also keep the connector from seating fully.
Wake a battery stuck in low-power protection
- Connect the doorbell to a known-good cable and wall adapter.
- Press and hold the orange setup button for about 5 seconds.
- Leave the doorbell plugged in for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Check Device Health in the Ring app.
- Look for even 1 or 2 percent movement.
- If there is no movement after an hour with confirmed-good charging gear, the battery may have failed.
A battery that drained completely can take longer than expected to show the first sign of charging.
Replace or work around a worn battery
Doorbell batteries lose capacity over time. If charges used to last weeks, then days, then hours, normal battery wear is likely.
On models with removable battery packs, replace the battery with the correct Ring battery for that model. If the model does not have a removable battery, wired power through a compatible Ring power kit or doorbell transformer can reduce or remove charging chores.
Avoid repeatedly letting the battery hit 0 percent. Charging around 20 to 30 percent helps lifespan. Cold weather and busy motion zones drain batteries faster, so narrow Motion Zones if street traffic is wasting power.
