Ring doorbells need a strong signal at the front door, and older models require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Band steering, weak RSSI, and router security rules cause many setup failures.
These steps apply to Ring Video Doorbell, 2, 3, 3 Plus, 4, Pro, Pro 2, Elite, and Wired models during setup or after a router change.

Use this if the Ring app gets stuck on Connecting to Wi-Fi, times out, or fails after a new router or password change.
Connect to 2.4 GHz first
The original Video Doorbell, Doorbell 2, and basic Wired models are 2.4 GHz-only. Newer models may support 5 GHz, but 2.4 GHz usually reaches the front door better.
- Open your router app or admin page.
- Check whether 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz share one network name.
- If needed, temporarily split the bands and name 2.4 GHz clearly.
- Open the Ring app.
- Go to Set Up a Device > Doorbells.
- When choosing Wi-Fi, select the 2.4 GHz network.
- Enter the password carefully.
- Finish setup before merging bands again.
If the router has one combined SSID, the phone or doorbell may choose the wrong band during setup.
Improve signal at the door
- Hold or mount the doorbell near its final position.
- Check RSSI in the Ring app when available.
- Treat weaker than about -65 dBm as a likely problem area.
- Move the router closer if practical.
- Add a mesh node or extender near the entryway.
- Watch for metal doors, storm doors, brick, stucco, and thick walls.
If a phone or laptop also struggles at the same spot, the issue is Wi-Fi coverage, not the doorbell.
Check router settings that block setup
- Temporarily disable MAC address filtering.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi with client isolation.
- Turn off AP isolation for the setup network.
- On mesh systems, pin the doorbell to 2.4 GHz if possible.
- Update router firmware.
- Temporarily disable whole-home VPN or parental filtering during setup.
Restart the router after major setting changes, then start Ring setup from the beginning. If repeated failures leave the doorbell stuck, hold the orange setup button for 15 to 20 seconds until the light spins, then set it up from a clean state.
