A blinking or pulsing red light on a Nest thermostat usually means the internal rechargeable battery is critically low. The thermostat is not supposed to run like a phone on battery; HVAC wiring should keep it charged.
These steps apply to Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd and 4th gen models and the 2020 Nest Thermostat.

Use this if the display flashes red, goes dark, restarts, briefly charges, and repeats. That pattern often points to an ongoing charging issue rather than a bad setting.
Rule out a one-time low-charge event
- Pull the thermostat display straight off its base.
- Charge it with a compatible USB cable and wall charger for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Watch whether the red blinking stops.
- Snap the display back onto the base.
- Monitor the thermostat for the next day or two.
- If the problem happened after a power outage, storm, or moving the thermostat, it may not return.
If the red blinking and restart cycle comes back within a few days, look for a wiring or HVAC power problem.
Check compatibility and power wiring
A recurring low-charge cycle often means the thermostat is not getting steady power from the HVAC system.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap the thermostat.
- Go to Settings > Equipment.
- Confirm the listed system type matches your actual HVAC system.
- Check whether a C-wire is connected.
- Run Nest’s compatibility checker with a wiring photo.
- Look for whether a Nest Power Connector or C-wire is recommended.
Many older homes have no C-wire, so Nest tries to draw tiny amounts of power from heating or cooling wires. That works on many systems but can cause low-charge cycles on others, especially some heat pumps and electronic ignition furnaces.
Safety before checking wires
- Turn off power to the furnace or air handler before removing the display or touching terminals.
- If you are not sure that switch kills power, turn off the HVAC breaker too.
- Photograph existing wire connections before moving anything.
- Do not guess at unlabeled wires.
- Call an HVAC technician or electrician if the wiring is unclear.
A Nest Power Connector or dedicated C-wire can solve chronic charging problems, but it is installed at the furnace or air handler. If you are not comfortable inside HVAC equipment, this is a sensible professional job.
