Most Nest thermostat Wi-Fi problems are settings and signal issues, not wiring problems. Band steering, weak signal, saved network details, or a mistyped password are common causes.
These steps apply to Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat 2020, and Nest Thermostat E. Current models often support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while older 1st and 2nd gen Learning Thermostats are 2.4 GHz-only.

Use this if the thermostat shows no Wi-Fi, a slashed Wi-Fi icon, or will not finish joining your network during setup.
Try the 2.4 GHz network
Even when 5 GHz is supported, 2.4 GHz reaches farther and avoids many band-steering setup problems.
- Open the thermostat menu.
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Review the available networks.
- If your network appears twice, choose the one without 5G, 5GHz, or _5 in the name.
- If you see only one combined network, open the router app and temporarily split 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz if setup fails.
- Select the 2.4 GHz network.
- Enter the password carefully.
Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Confirm the password by joining the same network on your phone if you are unsure.
Check password, range, and router rules
- Re-enter the password slowly on the thermostat.
- Check the signal bars beside the network name.
- If signal is weak, add a mesh node or Wi-Fi extender closer to the thermostat.
- Temporarily disable MAC address filtering while adding the thermostat.
- Do not use a guest network with device isolation enabled.
- Check whether router firmware or security settings changed recently.
A wall thermostat cannot easily be moved, so improving router or mesh placement is usually better than repeated setup attempts.
Reset network settings and restart router
- On the thermostat, go to Settings > Reset > Network.
- Clear saved Wi-Fi settings without wiping the whole thermostat.
- Unplug the router and modem if separate.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Plug them back in.
- Wait a few minutes for internet to return.
- Join the 2.4 GHz network again from the thermostat.
If it still will not connect, check the Google Home app and thermostat for update prompts. Older firmware can occasionally struggle with newer router behavior.
