Most smart blinds arrive with the motor built into the headrail, so installation is mostly bracket mounting plus app setup. Get the hardware level first, then pair and calibrate the motor.
These steps apply to battery-powered and rechargeable motorized blinds set up through their manufacturer’s app on iPhone or Android.

Mount the blinds
Follow your brand’s included template because bracket spacing varies by width and product style.
- Measure the window and confirm the blinds fit before drilling.
- Decide whether your product uses inside mount or outside mount.
- Hold the brackets against the window frame or wall.
- Mark screw holes with a pencil.
- Drill pilot holes.
- Secure the brackets with the included screws.
- Snap or slide the headrail into the brackets until it locks.
- Attach any included valance or trim.
Take your time aligning the brackets. Crooked brackets are one of the most common reasons motorized blinds bind, scrape, or travel unevenly.
Charge or power the motor
- If the blinds use a rechargeable battery, charge it fully before first use.
- Check the light indicator or app status for battery level.
- Confirm the motor cable or removable battery is seated correctly.
- Do a short manual open and close test if your model allows it.
Some models use removable battery packs, while others charge through a USB port on the headrail. Keep the charging cable accessible enough that future charging is not a chore.
Pair the blinds to the app
- Download the manufacturer’s app named in the manual.
- Create an account or sign in.
- Tap Add Device.
- Select your blind or shade model.
- Follow the pairing prompts, usually Bluetooth first.
- Connect any included hub or bridge if the blinds need Wi-Fi or voice assistant control.
- Test open and close from the app.
- Calibrate upper and lower limits when prompted.
Calibration teaches the motor where fully open and fully closed are. Do not skip it, or the blind may stop too high, pull too tight, or fail to close evenly.
Use schedules for sunrise, sunset, privacy, or heat control. Link the blind app to Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or Apple Home if supported, then place multiple blinds into a room group for one-tap or voice control. If you do not want to replace existing blinds, look at retrofit motors that clip onto a tilt wand or bead chain.
