Alexa can personalize a shared Echo for more than one person. The right setup depends on whether someone only needs a voice profile or needs a separate Amazon account tied to purchases and Prime benefits.
These steps apply to shared Echo speakers and displays set up through the Alexa app on iPhone or Android.

Use this if everyone in the house uses the same Echo but Alexa only knows one person’s calendar, reminders, shopping list, or music preferences. Most families should start with Household Profiles and Voice ID.
Add a Household Profile for a family member
This is the fastest way to give another person a more personal Alexa experience without creating a separate Amazon account for the device.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Household Profiles.
- Choose Create Profile or Add a Family Member.
- Enter the person’s name.
- Link a calendar or preferred music service if they want one.
- Set up Voice ID by having that person read the sample phrases aloud.
- Repeat for each person who should be recognized.
After Voice ID is trained, commands such as Alexa, what’s on my calendar? or Alexa, add milk to my list can return the right person’s information based on the voice Alexa recognizes.
Add a second adult’s Amazon account
Use Amazon Household when another adult needs their own Amazon account benefits, app data, purchases, Audible library, or music account rather than just a voice profile.
- On amazon.com, sign in to the primary account.
- Open Your Account > Amazon Household.
- Choose Add Adult.
- Invite the second adult by email.
- Have them accept the invite and sign in with their Amazon account.
- On their phone, open the Alexa app signed into that Amazon account.
- Check Devices for the shared Echo devices or ask the primary account holder to grant access.
Once the adult account is linked, each person can use shared Echo devices while keeping separate purchase history and account-based services.
Voice ID, children, and common limitations
Voice ID is helpful but not perfect. People with similar voices can be mixed up, especially siblings or family members with similar speech patterns. If Alexa keeps using the wrong calendar or list, redo Voice ID in a quiet room.
Children are handled differently. For users under 18, Amazon Kids is the intended profile path because it includes parental controls, content limits, and age-appropriate settings.
Household Profiles are optional. Anyone nearby can still ask for timers, weather, general questions, and basic smart-home commands even if Alexa does not recognize their voice.
