A smart plug is a small adapter that sits between a wall outlet and a device. It does not make the device itself intelligent; it simply controls whether electrical power reaches that device.
This applies to common Wi-Fi smart plugs from Kasa, Wyze, Amazon, Wemo, and similar brands.

Use this if you are considering a smart plug for a lamp, fan, coffee maker, string lights, humidifier, or small appliance. A smart plug is one of the easiest smart-home upgrades, but it is best for devices that already turn on when power is supplied.
How a smart plug actually works
The core idea is simpler than the marketing makes it sound.
- The smart plug joins your home Wi-Fi network during setup.
- Inside the plug is a small relay, which acts like an electronic switch.
- When you tap On or Off in the app, the command reaches the plug over Wi-Fi.
- The relay opens or closes, allowing power to pass through or stopping it.
- Voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant send the same kind of command after account linking.
The plug does not know whether a lamp, fan, or appliance is connected. It only controls the power flowing through the outlet.
Set up a smart plug for the first time
Most brands use a similar setup flow.
- Plug the smart plug into a wall outlet.
- Download the manufacturer’s app, such as Kasa Smart, Wyze, Wemo, or Alexa for an Amazon Smart Plug.
- Create or sign in to the account required by that brand.
- Choose Add Device in the app and select the correct plug type.
- Follow the pairing steps, which may briefly connect your phone to the plug’s temporary Wi-Fi signal.
- Enter your home Wi-Fi details.
- Name the plug clearly, such as Living Room Lamp.
- Plug in the device you want to control and test On and Off from the app.
To use voice control, link the smart plug’s app to Alexa, Google Home, or another assistant. In Alexa this is usually handled through a skill; in Google Home it is usually handled through linked services.
What smart plugs can and cannot do
A smart plug can turn power on or off. It usually cannot change settings on the device.
- It cannot dim a regular lamp unless the plug is a dimming model.
- It cannot change a fan speed that is controlled by buttons on the fan.
- If the device’s own switch is off, the smart plug may restore power without turning the device on.
- It works best with devices that resume their previous state when power returns.
Check the smart plug’s electrical rating before using it. Many indoor plugs are rated around 15 amps or 1800 watts, but you should still avoid unattended remote control of high-current or risky devices such as space heaters unless the device and plug manufacturer explicitly allow it.
Energy-monitoring models can track how much power a connected device uses over time. For outdoor lights or holiday displays, buy an outdoor-rated smart plug rather than using a regular indoor model outside.
If the internet goes down, many smart plugs can still be toggled with the physical button on the plug. App, schedule, and voice control may stop until Wi-Fi and cloud access return.
