A Nest camera does not require a subscription for basic use. You can still see the live feed, receive alerts, and use two-way audio without paying for Nest Aware.
A subscription matters when you want longer video history, smarter event detection, familiar faces, or continuous recording on supported cameras.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you are setting up a Google Nest camera or doorbell and want to know what you get free compared with Nest Aware. This applies to current Google Nest cameras and doorbells managed in the Google Home app.
What works without a subscription
The free tier is enough if you mainly want live monitoring and immediate alerts.
- Open the Google Home app and view the camera live from anywhere with internet access.
- Receive push notifications for motion, sound, or doorbell events supported by your model.
- Use the microphone and speaker for two-way talk.
- Review a short recent event-history window on supported current models.
- Adjust activity zones to reduce unnecessary motion alerts.
Free history is limited. Older clips roll off quickly, and you should not expect to browse yesterday’s porch activity or search through a long timeline without a paid plan.
What Nest Aware adds
Nest Aware is mainly about history length and smarter detection.
- Longer event video history, commonly 30 or 60 days depending on plan.
- Continuous 24/7 recording on supported wired cameras with the higher plan.
- Smarter alerts that can distinguish people, packages, pets, vehicles, or familiar faces when supported.
- More useful review when you need to check something that happened hours or days earlier.
- One subscription that covers Nest cameras and doorbells in the same home/account rather than a separate fee for each camera.
The exact plan names and features can change, so compare the current options in the Google Home app before subscribing.
How to check or start Nest Aware
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select the camera or doorbell.
- Tap the gear icon for settings.
- Open Nest Aware or Subscription.
- Review the current plan options, trial status, and storage length.
- Subscribe only if the added history or alerts are worth it for your household.
If a new camera includes a trial, check the countdown in the subscription settings. Once the trial ends, the camera drops back to the free feature set unless you subscribe.
Before canceling Nest Aware, save any important clips you may need. Footage older than the free window or outside the remaining storage period can be deleted after the subscription ends.
