August Smart Lock Factory Reset: How to Do It Safely

A factory reset wipes an August Smart Lock back to out-of-box setup. It removes paired users, offline keys, auto-unlock preferences, DoorSense setup, and Wi-Fi or bridge connections.

These steps apply to August Smart Lock 3rd Gen, 4th Gen, and August Wi-Fi Smart Lock using the August app on iOS or Android.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you are selling a home, moving out, handing over a rental, lost access, or troubleshooting a lock that remains broken after simpler fixes.

Reset from the August app

Use the app reset when the lock still responds over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

  1. Open the August app.
  2. Select the lock you want to reset.
  3. Tap the gear or settings icon.
  4. Open Advanced.
  5. Choose Factory Reset or Remove Lock if that is the wording shown.
  6. Confirm that users, codes, and history will be deleted.
  7. Wait while the app wipes the lock.
  8. Look for the lock light ring to pulse in setup mode.

Once reset, the lock is ready to pair as if it were new.

Manual reset on the lock itself

Use manual reset when the app cannot reach the lock or it is still tied to a previous owner.

  1. Remove the interior cover from the lock.
  2. Take out the battery pack.
  3. Find the small reset button on the circuit board.
  4. Hold the reset button while reinserting the battery pack.
  5. Keep holding for about 15 to 20 seconds.
  6. Release when the light ring flashes rapidly.
  7. Wait for the lock to reboot into setup mode.

Manual reset is more disruptive, so use the app method when possible.

Set the lock back up after resetting

A reset lock needs full setup again.

  1. Open the August app.
  2. Tap Add a Lock or Set Up a Device.
  3. Keep your phone near the lock during pairing.
  4. Remove old entries from Apple Home, Google Home, or other smart home apps.
  5. Re-add the lock to those platforms.
  6. Invite household members and guests again.
  7. Reconfigure Auto-Unlock and DoorSense.

If only one phone has trouble, removing and re-adding the lock in the app may be enough and creates less work than a full factory reset.

Factory reset does not fix a hard-to-turn deadbolt, grinding motor, or door alignment problem. Keep a physical key available in case batteries die or the app becomes unreachable.
