A completely dark Echo is usually a power delivery problem. The outlet, power strip, cable, or model-specific adapter fails more often than the speaker itself.
These steps apply to Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and Echo Studio devices.

Use this if the Echo has no light, no sound, and no response to Alexa or touch controls.
Verify the power source
Start with power before assuming the Echo has failed.
- Plug another device into the same outlet to confirm it works.
- Move the Echo to a different wall outlet.
- Use the original Amazon power adapter for that exact Echo model.
- Inspect the cable for fraying, bent connectors, or loose fit.
- Try a matching spare cable or adapter if you have one.
- Bypass power strips and surge protectors by plugging directly into the wall.
Echo adapters are not always interchangeable between generations. Wrong voltage or wattage can make a device look dead or half-powered.
Hard reset the device
If confirmed power still gives no response, try a reset to clear a frozen boot state.
- Keep the Echo connected to a working outlet and adapter.
- Find the reset control. On many current models, use the Action button.
- On some older models, use the recessed reset pinhole.
- Hold the reset control for about 20 to 25 seconds.
- Watch for the light ring to cycle orange or blue.
- If the ring lights, let setup mode finish and add the device again in the Alexa app.
If there is still no light or sound with known-good power, internal hardware failure becomes more likely.
Check for overheating or a stuck update
If the Echo feels hot, unplug it and let it cool for 30 minutes in open air before trying again.
If it stopped during an update, leave it plugged in for 15 to 20 minutes. Some updates briefly make the device look unresponsive before finishing.
Move the Echo away from direct sun, heating vents, and enclosed cabinets if heat keeps returning.
Echo devices usually have a one-year limited warranty. If power is confirmed and the unit remains dead, contact Amazon Support with the order number rather than opening the sealed device.
