An Xbox controller that flashes without connecting usually has stale pairing data, low batteries, wireless interference, or a receiver issue. Re-pairing is the best first move.
These steps apply to Xbox Wireless Controllers on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PCs.

Use this if the Xbox button flashes but never turns solid, or the controller will not pair with a console or PC.
Re-pair the controller from scratch
This refreshes the connection and clears stale pairing state.
- Hold the Xbox button for about 6 seconds to turn the controller off.
- On the console, hold the Pair button until pairing begins.
- Hold the Pair button on the controller near the USB port.
- Wait for the Xbox button to flash and then turn solid.
- On Windows, press the Pair button on the Xbox Wireless Adapter instead of the console.
If this works, the old pairing data was simply out of sync.
Check batteries and rule out interference
Power and wireless signal issues are the next most common causes.
- Replace AA batteries with a fresh pair.
- If using a rechargeable pack, plug in USB-C for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Move routers, wireless headsets, USB 3.0 drives, and other controllers farther away.
- Test with a USB-C cable directly connected to the console or PC.
- On Windows, check Device Manager under Bluetooth or Xbox Peripherals for warning icons.
- Test another controller on the same console or PC if available.
If wired works but wireless fails, focus on pairing, interference, firmware, or the wireless receiver.
Firmware, Bluetooth, and old pairings
On Xbox, open Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories and check for controller firmware updates.
Not every Xbox controller supports Bluetooth on PC. Older models need USB or the official Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Xbox consoles support up to eight controllers. Remove unused old pairings if the console has accumulated many devices.
Cold batteries can perform poorly. Let a controller and batteries warm to room temperature if they were stored in a cold car or room.
