An Xbox controller can fail on PC in two different ways: Windows may not connect to it at all, or Windows may see it while a specific game ignores it. Diagnose which one you have first.
These steps apply to Xbox Wireless Controllers on Windows 10 and Windows 11, wired or wireless.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the controller will not connect, connects but games do not respond, or works in one program but not another.
Fix a controller that won’t connect at all
Start with power, cable, adapter, and driver checks.
- For USB, try a different cable because some cables charge only and do not carry data.
- Try a different direct USB port on the PC.
- Check batteries or charge level.
- Open Device Manager and look under Bluetooth or Xbox Peripherals.
- If an Xbox device has a yellow warning icon, right-click and update the driver.
- If using the Xbox Wireless Adapter, plug it directly into USB instead of a hub.
- Press the adapter pairing button, then hold the controller pairing button until it connects.
A controller can light up from a power-only cable without actually connecting to Windows.
Fix Bluetooth pairing issues
Bluetooth works only on newer Xbox Wireless Controllers, not all older Xbox One models.
- Confirm the controller supports Bluetooth.
- Hold the pairing button near the USB port until the Xbox button flashes quickly.
- On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Add device > Bluetooth.
- Select the controller when it appears.
- If it paired before and stopped, remove the device and pair it again from scratch.
Older original Xbox One controllers need USB or the official Xbox Wireless Adapter instead of Bluetooth.
Fix a controller Windows sees but a game doesn’t
If Windows detects input, focus on Steam, the game, or firmware.
- Search Start for Set up USB game controllers and test button input.
- In Steam, open Settings > Controller and enable Xbox Configuration Support if needed.
- Check the game’s Controls or Input settings for controller mode.
- Update the game.
- Install the Xbox Accessories app from Microsoft Store and update controller firmware.
Close other controller remapping tools while testing. If multiple controllers are connected, disconnect all but one because some games only listen to the first controller.
Third-party Xbox-compatible controllers may need drivers from the controller maker. A full PC restart also clears cached device state more often than people expect.
