Xbox controller drift happens when an analog stick reports movement even while it is resting. Your character may walk, menus may move, or the camera may slowly pull to one side.
These steps apply to Xbox Wireless Controllers on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PCs.

Use this if a stick moves on its own, aim drifts, or the controller test screen shows the stick resting away from center.
Recalibrate the controller
Calibration is quick and can fix light drift without opening the controller.
- On Xbox, open Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the controller.
- Choose Test controller devices.
- Move both sticks through their full range and watch the on-screen indicator.
- If the dot rests away from center, look for a Calibrate option in the same menu.
- Follow the prompts to move each stick up, down, left, right, and in a circle.
- Return to the test screen and confirm the stick rests at center.
Not every controller firmware version exposes the same calibration tools, but recent Xbox Wireless Controllers may include them.
Clean around the stick
Dust under the stick rim is a common cause and cleaning is safe when done carefully.
- Power off the controller.
- Spray compressed air in short bursts around the base of the drifting stick.
- Move the stick slowly in circles while spraying.
- Lightly dampen a cotton swab with 90 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol.
- Clean around the base of the stick without letting liquid run inside.
- Let the controller dry for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Test again in Xbox Accessories.
Cleaning can remove debris. It cannot repair a worn analog sensor.
Warranty, repair, and dead zone workaround
If drift returns soon after calibration and cleaning, the stick module is probably worn. Xbox controllers usually have a limited warranty, so check support options before paying for a repair.
Replacement stick modules and repair kits exist, but opening the controller is not officially supported by Microsoft and can void remaining warranty.
Many games let you raise controller dead zone. That can hide mild drift while you decide on repair or replacement, but it does not fix the hardware.
