PS5 Fan Loud? How to Quiet It Down

Consoles and gaming troubleshooting category image

The PS5 fan should get louder under heavy game load, but it should not stay loud in menus or grow louder every week. Most fan noise comes from airflow, dust, placement, or heat around the console.

These steps apply to PS5 disc and digital editions, including PS5 Slim.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the PS5 sounds unusually loud during normal play, stays loud at the Home screen, or recently became noisier than it used to be.

Improve airflow and placement

Fan noise often drops once the console has enough space to breathe.

  1. Give the PS5 several inches of clearance around the sides and rear vents.
  2. Move it out of closed TV cabinets or cramped shelves.
  3. Use the included stand correctly whether the console is vertical or horizontal.
  4. Keep cables from bunching directly against the vents.
  5. Move the PS5 away from direct sunlight, AV receivers, amplifiers, and other heat sources.
  6. Check whether the room itself is unusually warm.

If the fan quiets down after moving the console into open air, airflow was the main cause.

Clean dust out of the vents

Dust buildup makes the fan work harder, especially after months in the same spot.

  1. Power off the PS5 completely and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Hold a can of compressed air upright.
  3. Spray short bursts into the rear and side vents.
  4. Focus on the larger vent areas where dust collects.
  5. Let the console sit for a few minutes before plugging it back in.
  6. Vacuum or dust the area around the console so loose dust does not return immediately.
  7. Repeat light cleaning every couple of months in dusty rooms, carpeted rooms, or homes with pets.

Do not spray long blasts or tilt the can enough to push liquid propellant into the console.

Updates and overheating warnings

Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any update. Sony can improve thermal behavior and fan control through system software.

If the fan suddenly runs at maximum speed, the console shows an overheating warning, or it shuts itself down, stop playing and let it cool for at least 30 minutes.

Repeated overheating shutdowns are a repair concern, not something to ignore. Check that vents are clear, placement is open, and contact PlayStation Support if the warning returns.
