When a PlayStation shows no light, no fan sound, and no response to the power button, start with power delivery before assuming the console has failed. Outlets, strips, and cables are responsible surprisingly often.
These steps apply to PS5, PS5 Slim, PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro consoles.

Use this if pressing the PlayStation power button does nothing at all: no beep, no front light, no fan, and no display.
Check the outlet, cable, and power supply
This is the quickest way to separate a dead power source from a console problem.
- Plug a lamp, charger, or another small device into the exact same wall outlet.
- If the console uses a power strip or surge protector, bypass it and plug directly into the wall.
- Try a known-good power cable that matches your PlayStation model.
- On PS5, push the cable firmly into the rear power port because it can look connected while sitting loose.
- If a different cable or wall outlet works, replace the original power source instead of troubleshooting the console.
PS5 has its power supply inside the console, not in an external brick. Once the outlet and cable are proven good, move to a reset and cooldown test.
Try a hard reset
A hard reset can clear a stuck power state without opening the console.
- On PS5, hold the console power button for about 7 seconds, past the first beep if you hear one.
- On PS4, hold the front power button for about 7 seconds until the second beep.
- Unplug the console from power.
- While it is unplugged, hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
- Plug the console back in, wait a few seconds, and press power again.
- If you have a paired controller, connect it with USB and try the PS button as well.
Listen closely for clicks, fan movement, or a beep. Any sign of life means the console is receiving power and may be failing later in startup rather than being completely dead.
Heat, surge protectors, and repair signs
If the console shut off during play after loud fan noise or heavy heat, let it sit unplugged for 15 to 20 minutes. Then place it in an open, ventilated area and try again.
A surge protector can trip internally after a power spike without making the failure obvious. If several devices on the same strip stopped working, reset or replace the strip.
If outlets, cables, hard resets, and cooldown do not bring any sign of life, the internal power supply may have failed. That is a repairable fault, but it is not a safe casual DIY repair unless you have electronics experience.
